RJN has a longstanding contract with the Calderdale and Kirklees NHS Foundation Trust which involves their teams in many projects across the Trust’s premises. The very first commission required decorating works to a large house which the Trust used as temporary accommodation for doctors and their families moving into the area to begin a new job. RJN’s attention to detail, their friendly, helpful manner and consummate professionalism have made the firm a reliable and cost-effective resource that is in constant demand by the Trust.

How we helped

Given the scope of this major project, we involved a paint manufacturer to supply a design team at no cost to the Trust. The designers provided a range of colour palettes and data on various specialist finishes, a resource which has become the hospital’s colour scheme reference library for all future projects.

The RJN team has decorated numerous wards at the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (HRI). While some wards are decorated when brand new or out of service, it’s sometimes essential to carry out works in occupied wards – a task which presents particular challenges. Our teams collaborate with the hospital’s staff and schedules to ensure that ward areas can be emptied, decorated and prepared for use efficiently and without impacting on patient care. We use only water-based paints in clinical buildings and specialist low-odour and antibacterial paints are often used to maximise the benefits to staff and patients.

Major contracts for the Trust include the complete redecoration of two 10-storey stairwells. Because of their frequent daytime use, we repainted the stairwells, steps and balustrades during the night, working from scaffolds where necessary.

Another large-scale project was the decoration of ceilings, walls, floors and woodwork of the 500m circulation corridor, deep in the HRI’s basement. This vital corridor forms the hospital’s main logistics artery which houses the kitchens, laundry and boiler house and in which deliveries of equipment and supplies take place. The scheduling and timely execution of this huge project was therefore vital to the hospital’s service continuity, and we fulfilled the works at night so as to cause minimal disruption to the hospital staff.

Trusted by the Trust – from start to finish

There are normally between one and ten RJN decorators working on the HRI site and our teams can often be found at the Trust’s other satellite premises around Huddersfield. We are proud to be entrusted with the meticulous planning and fulfilment of these and other important Trust projects and look forward to being of service for many years to come.
